Is Your Radiator A Work Of Art?

Wednesday August 19, 2009

If you have read some of the content on this site you will know that designer radiators aren’t just something you only find occasionally. They are now available widely and seem to be becoming more popular as well.

But while these designer radiators are very different from the usual kind we have in many homes in the UK, they also come in more than one type.

For example, some designer radiators are still recognisable as such. You can clearly see that it is a radiator and it still has the distinctive design of pipes that the hot water runs through. It is just that the design is more modern and perhaps uses some different materials as well. For example, some designer radiators are made from stainless steel, while others have a chrome or even a gun metal style finish.

But there is another group of designer radiators that are perhaps slightly harder to come by than the more standard kind. These really are designer in style, because they are created to be pure works of art as well as providing heat to your home.

So what do these designer radiators look like then?

Well let’s take a look at some of the offerings on a recent website to see what you can get hold of if the price is right. One offering was made in the shape of a bench, which meant that you were actually buying two products in one! You can sit on it and towel off after a bath perhaps, and yet underneath the bench seat there is a stylish radiator that will adequately heat your bathroom for you.

Another thoroughly modern design on this particular site came in the form of a surfboard of all things. If you are playful and you like your sport, you will no doubt like the appearance of this piece of artwork – and yes, it is still a proper radiator. It just doesn’t look like one.

Perhaps it is this need to try and disguise the radiator by putting it in plain sight that is the reason for making sure you are attracted to the idea of buying this kind of radiator. After all, they are more functional than anything else, and if you can camouflage them in some way they can be a really nice addition to any bathroom.

This is why some designers have clearly decided to make them into works of art. Indeed, some of them look so little like a radiator that anyone would be fooled. One recent example is a honeycomb design that uses different shades of red and orange to good effect. It is very big, but there is no doubt that it does the job perfectly.

So don’t be tricked into thinking that a radiator is a boring entity that is needed to provide warmth. It can and perhaps should stand out for good reasons as well – and as you can see, it can be stunning as well as practical.
