The Art Of Covering Up Your Radiators

Wednesday August 19, 2009

If you have designer radiators installed in your home, then you won’t want to cover them up because they look good just as they are.

But not everyone has radiators like this, and if you have standard ones you may not be so keen for other people to see them. You still need them of course to heat your home though, so why not consider making them more attractive by using radiator covers?

You may not have come across these before, but even if you have heard of them you might be surprised at just how many different designs are available. There are some companies online today that focus just on manufacturing and selling radiator covers of various different kinds.

The basic idea with all of them is the same though. They basically take the shape of a box, which fits over the radiator, sits on the floor and attaches directly to the wall. You will find that no matter what design you choose, it will have vents and holes incorporated into it to ensure that the heat from the radiator can still come out into the room.

Now you might think that if a radiator is covered up, it won’t be as efficient as it would be if it didn’t have a cover on it. But when you look at these designs you will see that this simply isn’t true. The vents and holes are in such a place that the heat is directed out into the room instead of simply going straight up – and that can actually help to heat any room more efficiently. That is, provided you haven’t put a piece of furniture in front of the radiator cover itself.

Having said that though, it is unlikely that you would do so, because the radiator covers do look very nice so you will want to appreciate them! As you find out more about them you will see that they come in a number of finishes as well. The cheaper ones are generally made from MDF or a similar material. This has the advantage that you can paint it if you wish, so that it will blend in with whatever you have in your home. Personalising your radiator covers in this way is an excellent way to enhance any room as well.

Of course there are other finishes available too. Some of the more expensive covers you will find are made from solid wood or a veneer. This is a thin layer of real wood that is glued onto a cheaper material. Therefore a veneered finish will be cheaper than real wood, but more expensive than MDF.

But you can get radiator covers in various designs and sizes, to fit any radiator you may wish to cover up. While some people go all out and buy designer radiators, not everyone can afford them. In this case buying radiator covers can be the best way to make a big difference in your home, without losing the benefit of the heat as well.
